The Art of Piero Della Francesca
Born in San Sepolcro in Tuscany in the early 13th century, Piero Della Francesca was one of the great artists of the early Italian Renaissance. He was known for his deep interest in theoretical study of perspective and geometry and his contemplative approach to his paintings.
His painting of “The Resurrection” shows us a very strong and conquering, Risen Christ…a perspective that stands out among his contemporaries.
We chose Della Francesca’s art based on his interpretation of the Christ who transcended death and is alive within our hearts today…a departure from the crucifix images…and a contemporary view of OFJ.
We feel this art bridges the gap between the historical view of Christ and the contemporary view of the Presence of Christ for all.
Della Francesca also painted many of the frescos in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, and painted himself into The Resurrection scene. He is the man sleeping in the brown garb.
Piero Della Francesca died in San Sepolcro on the very day that Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the Americas in 1492.
